How to install Zaptec Sense - RS485 Modbus and Ethernet connectivity

Zaptec Sense optimises energy use for EV charging, making charging smarter and more efficient. This guide provides step-by-step instructions for setting up Zaptec Sense with RS485 Modbus and Ethernet connectivity.

Only a certified electrician can install the Zaptec Sense - RS485 Modbus and Ethernet connectivity. 

 



What's included

Your package contains the following items:

  • Zaptec Sense unit
  • Custom Micro USB cable
  • Adhesive magnet sheet
  • Double-sided tape

In addition:

  • 5V DC DIN rail power supply (min. output current: 1A)
  • DIN rail digital energy meter.
  • Optional: Unshielded CAT5e/CAT6 Ethernet cable.



Step 1: Physical installation

Follow these steps to connect the Zaptec Sense: 

  1. Mount the power supply to the DIN rail.
  2. Connect Zaptec Sense to the modules using the custom Micro USB cable.
    • White, green, and brown (GND): Connect to the e-meter.
    • Red [V+] and black [V-]: Connect to the power supply.
  3. Zaptec Sense supports several e-meters. Installation diagram for each model can be found here:

Ensure all external equipment is installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Configure the Modbus baud rate to 9.6 kbps. 

 



Step 2: Configure Zaptec Sense in app

After installation, you'll need to configure Zaptec Sense via the Zaptec app: 

  1. Open the Zaptec app and log in.
  2. Go to Dashboard > Tap the three dots in the corner > Install Product.

  3. Scan the QR- code on the back of the device or manual.
  4. Follow the instructions to set the main fuse, confirm the meter connection, and connect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Network settings

Zaptec Sense supports both Wi-Fi and Ethernet connections. For Ethernet: connect the Ethernet cable to the RJ45 port.

  1. Hold phone near the Zaptec Sense.
  2. Open the Zaptec app > Installations > Zaptec Services > Zaptec Sense.
  3. Adjust network settings, IP address, phase rotation, and/or meter type.

  Note:

If Zaptec Sense loses internet, the charging station will be set to provide minimum power (6A). This can be changed in the Zaptec Portal.

 



Light indicator 

The lights on your Zaptec Sense will help you know if everything is working:

  • Solid white: Device is configured and active.
  • Solid orange: Device has received an IP but has no connection to the cloud.
  • Two orange blinks: No IP has been received via Ethernet or Wi-Fi.
  • Orange, white, orange, white: No M-bus data received. Ensure HAN port is activated by your utility company.
  • Three orange blinks: Device not configured. Log in via the Zaptec app to set up Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

FAQ

When installing the e-meter, do I need to configure the e-meter?

For Janitza UMG604-E and Janitza UMG96RM-E-RCM the default RS485/Modbus baud rate is: 115.2kbps (factory setting), we use 9.6kbps in our Zaptec Sense. 

Which e-meter does Zaptec Sense support?

The Zaptec Sense can connect to either of these:
