Zaptec Sense optimises energy use for EV charging, making charging smarter and more efficient. If you have a smart energy meter with a HAN port (RJ45), this guide will help you set up Zaptec Sense for HAN connectivity. Both electricians and homeowners can install this version of Zaptec Sense.
If you don't have a smart meter or a HAN port, you can check out our other installation guides for different setups, such as Zaptec Sense – P1 connectivity or Zaptec Sense – RS485 Modbus and Ethernet connectivity.
Activating the HAN port
Before you can connect the Zaptec Sense - HAN connectivity, you'll need to make sure that the HAN port (on your energy meter) is activated. The HAN port is often deactivated by default, so contact your electricity provider to activate it. For more details, visit the NEK website.
Note:
Zaptec Sense complies with HAN-NVE push list.
Step 1: Connect Zaptec Sense to the energy meter
Follow these steps to connect your Zaptec Sense:
- Locate the HAN port on your energy meter. This is a RJ45 port, similar to a network cable port.
-
Connect Zaptec Sense to the HAN port using the included communication cable.
- Wait 3 minutes for the device to start up (it will blink orange when ready).
Tip:
If the HAN port is already in use by another device, you can use a Y-splitter. Just connect a regular 5VDC phone charger to the micro USB input on the Zaptec Sense.
Step 2: Pair Zaptec Sense with the installation
Now, you'll pair your Zaptec Sense with the Zaptec app:
- Open the Zaptec app and log in.
-
Go to Dashboard > Tap the three dots in the corner > Install Product.
- Scan the QR- code on the back of the device or user manual.
-
Follow the instructions to set the main fuse, confirm the meter connection, and connect to Wi-Fi.
-
If this is your first installation, select Pair with a charger and enter the charging station serial number.
The installation is complete when the light on Zaptec Sense turns solid white. The device will appear under your active add-on services in the app.
Light indicators
The lights on your Zaptec Sense will help you know if everything is working:
- Solid white: Device is configured and active.
- Solid orange: Device has received an IP but has no connection to the cloud.
- Two orange blinks: No IP has been received via Ethernet or Wi-Fi.
- Orange, white, orange, white: No M-bus data received. Ensure HAN port is activated by your utility company.
- Three orange blinks: Device not configured. Log in via the Zaptec app to set up Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
