Zaptec Go OCPP Native configuration guide

OCPP Native also referred to as 'box level' OCPP 1.6-J, is available on Zaptec Go with supported firmware. This guide walks you through the process of setting up and managing OCPP Native functionalities on your Zaptec Go charger. For detailed information, refer to the Zaptec Go OCPP Native release notes.

Get OCPP Native permission

To use the OCPP Native feature, make sure you have permission to OCPP Native in the Zaptec Portal:

  1. Log in to the Zaptec Portal.
  2. Navigate to User Groups and select your company's group.
  3. If Allow OCPP Native is enabled, you have the necessary permission to enable the OCPP Native feature. Otherwise, contact your Zaptec sales rep to request OCPP Native permission for your organisation/User Group.

Membership of this User Group will define who can enable OCPP Native. Consider creating a separate group or requesting permission for your existing one.

Get OCPP Native firmware

To enable OCPP Native, ensure your charger firmware has version 2.4.0.2 or higher:

  1. Update firmware from the Zaptec app or Zaptec Portal. Contact Support if no updates are available.
  2. If your firmware version is below 2.4.0.2, submit a support ticket with your charger serial number(s) needing the OCPP Native-capable firmware. When the support ticket is closed, check for any available firmware updates and apply.
  3. Once updated, OCPP Native is supported, and you can proceed to the next steps.

Setting up a new OCPP Native installation (Recommended)

For new installations, follow these steps:

  1. In the Zaptec Portal; go to Installations and click + Add installation.
  2. Choose OCPP Native as the installation type.

  3. Fill in installation details, including the OCPP central system URL using the following rules:
    • The URL must begin with ws:// or wss://
    • The maximum URL length is 2038 characters
    • The connection port can be optionally specified. If omitted, the connection port will be 80 (for ws://) and 443 (for wss://)
    • Do not specify the serial number in the URL; the serial number of the charger will be automatically appended to the connection URL in uppercase

Example:
If the required OCPP URL is; wss://myserver.com:80/ocpp/ZAP123456 where ZAP123456 is the charger serial number, enter wss://myserver.com:80/ocpp (without a trailing /) in the OCPP central system URL field. The charger will then connect to the OCPP central system with the full URL(including the serial number in upper case).

    4. Save the installation. Note: This type is limited to 3 chargers, 32A maximum.

    5. Under Circuits, + Add circuit and enter circuit details.

    6. Click + Add charger, enter charger details (serial number), and activate.

    7. A green OCPP symbol indicates a successful connection.

Activating OCPP Native mode on an existing installation (Alternative)

Before OCPP Native mode can be enabled on an existing installation, OCPP Native permission must be applied in the Zaptec app or Zaptec Portal by the owner of the installation.

  1. Request a partner lookup key (four characters) from your OCPP provider. The OCPP provider can find this key under their User Group that has Allow OCPP Native permission.
  2. In the Zaptec Portal:
    • Go to the Installation tab in the portal
    • Click Permissions, then Give Permission.
    • Choose Partner, enter the partner lookup key, and confirm Service access.

  •

Once you have the required OCPP Native permission, follow these steps to enable OCPP Native mode on an existing installation:

  1. Go to the Installation in the Zaptec Portal.
  2. Ensure chargers are online and no charging sessions are active. If any charger is currently charging, open charging sessions must be closed before proceeding. Otherwise charging session data may be lost.
  3. Go to Settings > Details > Type, and change from Home to OCPP Native.

      4. Enter the OCPP central system URL using the following rules:

    5. Finish by clicking Save.

Note: if you get the following error, this means that OCPP Native permission has not been applied to the installation:

This permission must be granted by an Owner of the installation before OCPP Native mode can be enabled in the app or portal (see steps above).

Once saved, OCPP Native is activated on the chargers in the installation. Note that this installation type is limited to 3 chargers, 32A maximum.

A successful connection is shown by a green OCPP symbol on the charger icon and charging station pages.

How to identify when a charger is in OCPP Native mode

OCPP Native mode is indicated by
 "chargePointModel": "Zaptec Go OCPP"
in the OCPP boot notification message.
If the charger in in OCPP Cloud mode, the OCPP boot notification message will instead contain
 "chargePointModel": "Zaptec Go"

Unsuccessful connection

During the setup of the OCPP Native feature, you may encounter two scenarios:

  • If the connection fails, you'll see a red OCPP symbol and receive a warning message. You'll also see a message on the charger status page.

  • If the charger doesn't support OCPP Native, you'll also see a red OCPP symbol and get a warning message.

Disable OCPP Native mode

To turn off OCPP Native mode:

  1. Go to the Installation in the Zaptec Portal.
  2. Ensure all chargers are online.
  3. Access Settings > Details > Type and change to Home.
  4. Save the changes.

After turning off OCPP Native mode, chargers will be in Stand-alone mode. To re-enable Zaptec power management and authentication, go to Circuits > Charger > Settings and switch off Stand-alone mode.
