Zaptec Sense helps you charge smarter. It reads real-time data from your energy meter and adjusts charging to avoid peaks and blown fuses. If you have a smart energy meter with an P1 port (RJ12), this guide will help you connect and activate Zaptec Sense for P1 connectivity.
For other connection types, see:

Activate the P1 port
By default, the P1 port is usually deactivated. You’ll need to contact your electricity provider to enable it before installing Zaptec Sense.
Step 1: Physical installation
- Plug Zaptec Sense into the energy meters P1 port using the included R12 communication cable.
Wait at least 3 minutes. The light will start blinking orange when the device is ready.
If the HAN port is already in use by another device, you can use a Y-splitter and connect a standard 5VDC phone charger to the micro USB input on the Zaptec Sense.
Step 2: Set up in the Zaptec App
After installation:
- Open the Zaptec App and log in with your Zaptec account.
- Go to Dashboard > Tap the three dots in the corner > Install product.
- Scan the QR code on the back of the Zaptec Sense unit or in the manual.
- Follow the instructions to connect to a network, set the main fuse value and confirm the e-meter connection.
-
Pair your Zaptec Sense with your installation. If you have not created an installation, press
Pair with a charger and add the serial number.
Once the light indicator on Zaptec Sense changes to continuous white, the installation is complete. The unit will now be added to your active add-on services in the app.
Light status indicators
Use the LED lights on the Zaptec Sense to check its status:
- Solid white: Device is correctly configured and active.
- Solid orange: IP address received, but cloud connection failed.
- 2 orange blinks: No IP address received via Ethernet or Wi-Fi.
- Orange → white (looping): No M-bus data received. Check if the HAN port is activated.
- 3 orange blinks: Device not configured. Log in via the Zaptec App to set up Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

If Zaptec Sense loses connection, it automatically reduces charging current to the minimum power (6A) to avoid overloading your system. You can change the minimum power in the Zaptec Portal.
Disabling Zaptec Sense
- Open the Zaptec App > Installations > Zaptec Services.
- Toggle the switch off to disable Zaptec Sense.
- Adjust the maximum charging current following installation capacity, then tap Save.
AMS smart meters
Various manufacturers provide AMS power meters, such as Kamstrup, Kaifa/Nuri, and Aidon. This choice of meter can differ based on location and the grid company.
Different smart meters have certain specifications and requirements. If you set up Zaptec Sense and don't get the correct readings, it may be due to the e-meter type. Ensure compatibility by referring to manufacturer's documentation for accurate installation guidance.
Please note that for Zaptec Sense P1 the supported smart meters rely on what protocol the grid owner has running on the AMS. This means that if you have two smart meters of the same brand and model, only one of them may work with the P1 if the other one does not have the correct protocol.
