If you're new to Zaptec or EV charging, you might be wondering how to use a charge key (an RFID/NFC tag) to unlock a charging station and start charging your vehicle. Whether you're using a Zaptec Key - our own RFID/NFC tag - or another compatible tag, this guide will explain everything you need to know, including setup, troubleshooting tips, and FAQs.
What is a Zaptec Key?
The Zaptec Key is an RFID/NFC tag linked to your user profile, allowing you to “unlock” a Zaptec charging station and start charging. While we provide the Zaptec Key, our chargers also work with many standard RFID/NFC tags. For example, if you already have a compatible tag, such as an access card with the MIFARE Classic, type A standard, you can register and use it instead.
How to add and use an RFID/ NFC- tag
You can add and manage any compatible tag using either the Zaptec app or the Zaptec Portal on your desktop.
- Open the Zaptec app, go to Account at the bottom right.
- Select Zaptec Key and tap + Add Zaptec Key.
- Hold your phone near the charger to connect, or select your charger from the list.
- Name your tag, tap Next, and hold the tag near the charger until you hear the confirmation beep.
- Your key is now registered, and you can manage it under Zaptec Keys.
- Log in to the Zaptec Portal on your desktop.
- Go to My Profile located at the top right corner.
- Click Add Charge Card or the (+) symbol.
- Enter the name and code of your tag (the code is typically printed on the back of the tag). When reistering via the app, the code will automatically be added when you scan the card.
- Click Save to complete registration.
Tip: You can add as many tags as you want to your account, and they will work wherever you have permission.
Adding an RFID/NFC tag for a new user
To add a Zaptec Key for a new user, this must be done in the Zaptec Portal during the invitation process (not available via the Zaptec app).
- In the Zaptec Portal, go to the Installation tab.
- Select Permission and click + Give Permission.
- Enter the email address of the user, check the box to send the invitation, and select the appropriate user role.
- Click + Add Charge Card and input the charge card codes (you can add multiple codes separated by commas).
Important: Charge keys can only be added during the creation of a new account.
Existing users must log in and add the charge keys themselves due to privacy regulations.
FAQ
Do I need to use a charge tag (Zaptec Key)?
Not necessarily. If the charging facility requires authorization, you'll need either an RFID tag or an app to start charging. The RFID tag must be linked to your user profile, and access must be granted by the installation owner or by the payment operator. You don't need to use a Zaptec's key specifically; most standard tags work fine.
What RFID tags does the charging station support?
Zaptec supports NFC/RFID standard: MIFARE Classic, type A, which is the most common standard for RFID chips and NFC charging cards.
Do I need a Zaptec Key when the app can be used?
No, it's only an option if a phone isn't available.
Where can I buy a Zaptec Key?
Contact your installer for purchase options.
Troubleshooting: Common issues
My RFID tag isn't starting the charger
- Check registration: Confirm your tag is correctly linked to your profile in the Zaptec app or Zaptec Portal.
- Verify access: Make sure your profile has permission to charge at the location and charger.
- Payment system: If the charging system or charging station uses a payment operator, ensure your RFID tag is registered with the payment provider’s system. It is the payment service that controls access and the start of charging.
What if I lose my key?
If you lose your charging key, log in to the app or portal and delete the tag to keep your account secure.
