An RFID/NFC tag (charge card) authenticates your user profile at the charging station, allowing you to "unlock" charging. This guide explains how to set up and use your charge card with a Zaptec charger.
- Zaptec charging stations support most standard RFID/NFC tags, such as MIFARE Classic access card, type A standard.
- If you want to buy a Zaptec Key we recommend contacting your installer for purchase options.
Charging at restricted locations
To charge at locations you have access to:
- Use your charge card or the Zaptec app.
- In the Zaptec app, tap the Authenticate button on the dashboard screen to start charging.
If you want to use someone else's charging station, you need to ask the owner to grant you access.
If the charging station is managed through a third-party system, you'll need to request access and add your charge card or account through that system.
Adding a charge card using the Zaptec app
- Open the Zaptec app and go to Account (bottom right corner).
- Select Zaptec keys and tap + Add Zaptec Key.
- Connect to the charging station by holding your phone near the charger or selecting your charger from the list.
-
Register your tag:
- Name your tag and tap Next.
- Hold the tag near the charging station until you hear the confirmation beep.
- Your charge card is now registered and can be managed under Zaptec Keys.
Adding a charge card using the Zaptec Portal
- Log in to the Zaptec Portal.
- Go to My Profile (top right corner on desktop).
- Click Add Charge Card or the + symbol.
-
Enter the details for your charge card:
- Provide a name for your tag.
- Input the tag code (printed on the back of the tag). If registering via the app, the code will automatically be added when you scan the card.
- Click Save to complete registration.
You can add as many tags as you like to your account. They will work with any charger where you have permission.
Adding a charge card for a new user
To add a charge card for a new user, you must do this in the Zaptec Portal during the invitation process (not available via the Zaptec app).
- Go to the Installation tab in the Zaptec Portal.
- Select Permission and click + Give Permission.
- Enter the user's email address and check the box to send the invitation.
- Assign the appropriate role.
- Tap + Add Charge Card and input the charge card codes (you can add multiple codes separated by commas).
Important:
- You can only add charge cards to another user's account during the creation of the account.
- Existing users must log in and add their own charge keys for privacy reasons.
If your charge card (RFID tag) isn't working
- Ensure that your tag is registered: Confirm your tag is correctly linked to your profile in the Zaptec app or Zaptec Portal.
- Verify access: Confirm that your user profile has permission to use the charging location and charger. If access is managed by the station owner, contact them to grant you permission.
- Payment system: If the charging system or charging station uses a payment operator, ensure your RFID tag is registered with the payment provider’s system. It is the payment service that controls access and the start of charging.
