Setting up a Zaptec Pro installation is a three-step process:
Install the hardware
Mount, wire and power the backplates and charging units.Create the installation in the Zaptec Portal
Add site details, circuits, and charging stations (this guide).Commission and configure
Connect charging stations and set up administration.
This guide covers step two.
For on-site mounting and wiring, see How to install Zaptec Pro (physical install).
Before you start
- Every Zaptec Pro installation must be created in the Zaptec Portal before you can activate the charging stations.
- You must log in with a Zaptec account that is connected to your company's user group.
- Certified technicians and service partners can create new installations. New partners or companies without a user group can request one after completing the Zaptec certification courses.
1. Create a new installation
- Log in to the Zaptec Portal.
-
Go to Installations and click + Add installation.
-
Fill in the details:
- Name: Choose a clear site name (e.g. "Main Office Garage").
-
Type:
- Home: Domestic installations of up to 3 charging stations on one circuit ≤ 32A.
- Pro: More than 3 charging stations, or any circuit > 32A. (Note: You can't upgrade a Home installation to Pro later.)
- Category: Select from Community Housing, Business, Private or Public.
- Address: Enter the physical site address.
- Country: Site location.
- Electrical grid: Select the correct grid type (Important for load balancing).
- Charging system circuit breaker (A): Enter the maximum current available for charging at the site.
-
Click Save.
2. Add circuits
- Open your new installation and go to the Circuits tab.
- Click + Add circuit.
- Enter the circuit name and circuit breaker value (A).
- Tip: To avoid overloading the upstream overcurrent protection breaker, you can enter a slightly lower value. As the car may temporarily draw more current than allocated, a 20% safety margin is recommended for installations with continuous loads.
- Click Save.
System load management:
You do not need to limit the maximum current on each charging station to match the circuit fuse. The system automatically ensures that the total load on the circuit does not exceed the fuse rating.
- To edit a circuit, select the pencil icon.
- To delete a circuit, select the trash can icon.
⚠️ If you deactivate a circuit without first removing active charging stations, their serial numbers will be locked until Zaptec Support manually removes them.
3. Add a charging station (charge point)
- In the Circuits tab under Installations, click the correct circuit.
-
Click on the + symbol to add a charge point.
- Enter the charging station's serial number and assign a name.
-
Naming tip:
- Charging stations are listed alphabetically and numerically.
- If you name them Charger 1, Charger 2 … Charger 10, the order will be: 1, 10, 2, 3, etc.
- To keep them in sequence, use leading zeros: Charger 01, Charger 02 … Charger 10.
- For more than 99 chargers, use three digits (001, 002, 003 … 100).
-
Naming tip:
- Click Activate > Add.
- If you're adding several charging stations, check the Add more box.
- If you're adding several charging stations, check the Add more box.
The charging station has now been added to the installation. You can view its status, settings, and charging history in the Zaptec Portal.
- To show or hide deactivated charge points, toggle Show deactivated charge points (top-right corner).
- Need to remove, replace, or move a charging station? Learn how to.
4. Assign permissions
- In the installation, go to Permissions > Give permission.
-
Search for the owner by entering their email address.
-
If the user doesn't have an account, click Check to invite user.
-
-
Select the user and assign roles:
- Owner: Full access.
- User: Can charge and authenticate.
Users can be invited either to the whole installation (access to all charging stations) or to a specific charger (access to just that charger). Assign access to the installation if they need to use or manage every charger. Assign access to the charger if they should only use their own charging station.
For more details, see Understanding the Zaptec roles and permissions.
