How to transfer ownership of a Zaptec charger from a CPO system to the Zaptec App

This guide is for CPOs who want to offboard a Zaptec Go or Zaptec Go 2 from their own backend/app and release the charger so the end user can use the Zaptec App instead.

It covers how to:

  • Offboard a charger from your CPO system.
  • Transfer ownership to the end user.
  • Release the charger so it can be used with the Zaptec App.

What you need to do (summary)

To transfer or release a Zaptec charger from your CPO system to the Zaptec App, you must complete all of the following:

  1. Set the installation to Zaptec authentication.
  2. Turn stand-alone mode off on the charger.
  3. Set a valid maximum current on the charger (for example, 16 A).
  4. Add or invite the end user to the installation as User + Owner.

The sections below show you how to do each of these steps in Zaptec Portal.

Step 1: Find the charger in Zaptec Portal

  1. Go to portal.zaptec.com.
  2. In the left menu, select Chargers.
  3. In the search field, type the charger’s serial number.
  4. Click the charger to open its details.

You will now see a link to the installation the charger belongs to.

Click on the charger

Step 2: Set the installation to Zaptec authentication

This step moves the charger away from your own authorisation setup and prepares it for use with the Zaptec app. It is a core part of offboarding the charger from your CPO system and starting the transfer of ownership to the end user.

  1. From the charger view, click the installation name to open the installation.

  2. Go to Settings, and open the Authentication section.
  3. Set Authentication to Zaptec.
  4. Disable Authorisation
    • With authorisation disabled, the charger is ready to allow charging.
    • The end user can later enable authorisation in the Zaptec App if they want stricter access control.
  5. Click Save.

At this point, the installation is using Zaptec authentication instead of your proprietary system.

Step 3: Turn off stand-alone mode and set maximum current

Next, make sure the charger’s own settings will not block charging once you have released it to the end user.

  1. In the same installation, go to Circuits.

  2. Click on the charger to open the Charger settings.

  3. Check and update:
    1. Maximum current is not 0 A, but 16 A.
    2. Stand-alone mode must be off
  4. Click Save

This ensures the charger is technically ready to be used with the Zaptec app after you offboard it.

Step 4: Add or invite the end user as User + Owner

To complete the offboarding from your CPO system and transfer ownership to the end user, you now need to give them access to the installation.

  1. Click on the installation name from the charger view.

  2. In the installation view, go to the Permissions tab.

  3. Click Give permission.

  4. In the email field, type the end user's email address.
    • If they already have a Zaptec account, you can add this email directly.
    • If they do not have a Zaptec account yet, select the option to invite them.
  5. Click Next.

  6. Assign the role User+Owner to the end user.
  7. Click Next, then click Save.

Step 5: What the end user needs to do

After you save the permission change:

  1. The end user receives an email from Zaptec asking them to activate their Zaptec account.
  2. Ask them to check their spam or junk folder if they cannot find the email.
  3. Once they accept the invitation and log in to the Zaptec App with the same email address, they can:
    1. See and control the charger.
    2. Start and stop charging.
    3. Enable authorisation in the Zaptec App if they want to control who can charge.

When these steps are completed, the charger is fully offboarded from your CPO system and ownership is transferred to the end user in the Zaptec ecosystem.
